Light Aircraft Pilot Licence

The EASA Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (Aeroplanes) is an EU-only licence for those unable to attain the medical standard of PPL(A) or wishing to qualify in fewer hours to fly for pleasure only. The minimum flying training amount is 30 hours and there are theoretical knowledge exams to pass.

Initial training

The course starts with student familiarisation with the aircraft, followed by the first lessons in flight. You will learn to fly straight and level, make turns, climb and descend, and handle some in-flight emergencies. All lessons at this stage are dual with an instructor.

Circuit and first solo

The student then moves on to practicing take-offs, landings and the circuit flying. This stage of training culminates with one of the greatest achievements – the first solo.

Circuit consolidation

After the first solo the student briefly remains in the circuit for a mix of supervised solo and dual consolidation lessons.

Navigation

Next the student begins to learn the basics of navigation. The first few nav exercises are flown with the instructor, and then solo. A key feature of this stage is a 144 km solo flight with one landing at an aerodrome different from departure/destination.

Skills Test

When the student reaches the required standard, the instructor recommends him/her for the flying test. The typical profile is a 2-hour flight, during which the general handling skills and navigation capabilities are tested.
